As 2025 approaches, we at Crystal Clear Copy are buzzing with anticipation, ready to dive into our end-of-year planning and strategic sessions. However, before we can do that as a business, I must first perform a personal evaluation of my goals for the next year. This leads me back to the tried-and-true “Word of the Year.”
If you read our blog on Navigating 2024 with My Word of the Year, this may all sound familiar to you. To which, I would suggest just skipping around to get a quick reminder and maybe take inspiration from my new words. However, if you are new to my writing, I am excited to introduce to you the transformative concept of the "Word of the Year."
This year, I've chosen three powerful words starting with 'C' to guide me through different facets of my life and work. Stay tuned as I unveil these words and explore their significance in my journey.
What is a "Word of the Year"?
What exactly is a "Word of the Year"? It’s a concept where you select a word—or a small group of words—as a guiding light for the coming year. This word acts as a mantra or focal point that encapsulates your aspirations and directs your actions.
I first heard about this concept from a business coach I was working for, and I heard it again when working for a happiness expert. They both used this concept as a tool to simplify goals and sharpen focus in a way that wasn’t overwhelming.
The benefits of adopting a "Word of the Year" are substantial. It serves as a constant reminder of your intentions, steering you through decisions and actions with purpose and clarity. We all know how easy it can be to get off course from our goals when other new “shiny” things distract us. So, this method goes beyond traditional goal-setting by aligning your actions with your core values and vision, ensuring each step you take contributes to a more intentional and fulfilling life.
Rather than falling off a bandwagon New Year’s goal by the end of January, these words of the year act as a principal you can fall back onto when decisions are tough. Whether it’s a single word like ‘growth’ or a more nuanced phrase, this practice acts as a powerful tool for personal and professional growth, providing a framework to navigate life’s opportunities and challenges efficiently.
Single Word vs. Multiple Words: Choosing Your Guiding Mantra
When it comes to the practice of selecting a "Word of the Year," there's a choice to be made between using a single word or multiple words.
The traditional route is to choose one word, which provides simplicity and clarity. A single word acts as a focused, powerful anchor, offering a clear reminder of your overarching goals throughout the year. It serves as a mantra, easily repeated and held close, guiding your actions and decisions. For many, one word is sufficient to inspire and unify their efforts across all areas of life, making it a straightforward and potent choice.
However, some people (like me) find that a single word doesn't quite capture the breadth of their aspirations. In my experience, I find that opting for multiple words—specifically three—allows for a richer, more nuanced approach.
In this case, each word addresses a different facet of life, creating a balanced trifecta that reflects various aspects of personal and professional ambitions. This method doesn't dilute the focus but instead expands it, providing a structured way to align goals across diverse areas. This multi-dimensional approach can be particularly resonant for those with varied objectives or who seek growth in several distinct aspects of their lives.
To choose my three words, I use a system I made up that I dubbed the 3P System —Professional, Personal, and Physical. I have found that this framework allows me to achieve targeted growth in each main category that typically dominates one's time. Rather than a single word that loses meaning, I choose a letter to base my words and then select the appropriate goals for each topic.
Gleaning Insights from Last Year’s Experience:
So, how did 2024 go? Reflecting on the previous year's words—Diversify (Professional), Dedicate (Physical), and Deepen (Personal)—each word significantly shaped my personal and professional experiences, leaving lasting impacts and lessons.
I’m going to keep it short, because let’s be real..you don’t need nor care about all the deets. So, here’s a basic idea of what my words helped me do:
Diversify: Expanded my business horizon by venturing into new creative projects.
Dedicate: Focused on personal growth and maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Deepen: Strengthened relationships and personal connections, enriching my social and family life.
Introducing My 2025 Words of the Year: Cultivate, Condition, Cherish:
Now, I am going to get a little personal to give you context into my choices for 2025. This past year, I have achieved quite a few major life milestones. I got married last April and bought a house in September.
While these life milestones have been amazing, they have come at a toll. I’ve had to sacrifice (which I did so willingly and intentionally) time spent on my business and on my personal health. This year, I am focusing on regaining those aspects. I want to delve further into my business, regroup my physical health, and settle into this new chapter of my life.
Thus (and yes, I used “thus”) for 2025, I’m excited to introduce my new guiding words:
Cultivate: This word reflects my business goal to deepen into niche areas that intrigue me the most, fostering growth and expertise.
Condition: Represents my physical goal to re-establish a sustainable health routine, embracing activities like gym workouts, running, and mindful eating.
Cherish: Focuses on my personal life, aiming to fully appreciate and settle into the new chapters of marriage and homeownership, ensuring these changes enhance my overall happiness and well-being.
How I Plan to Integrate These Words into Daily Life:
So words are just words until they are put into action. That’s why incorporating these words into every aspect of daily life is crucial for making them effective. My approach includes:
Using a hand-made custom planner to track how daily activities align with these words.
Setting up visual reminders and checkpoints to ensure I’m consistently applying these themes.
Monthly reflections to assess progress and make adjustments as needed through my brand new Word of the Year Journal!
Others may have different modes in which to track, analyze, and write about their progress, but this simple and in-your-face method is what works best for me.
Curious about the journal? I made one for myself and decided to share it with you, too!
